Today we had a guest speaker come visit our classroom and spend an hour talking to us about the opportunities to volunteer in our community. Megan Fairhead from Elderwood of Hamburg spoke about the value of volunteering, responsibilities of volunteering, volunteer safety, and what to talk about with residents at Elderwood. Megan gave us some great ideas and taught us about the ways we can learn and work toward classroom goals wile volunteering in our own community. Thank you Megan!
Today we had our new principal Dr. Ramirez in our classroom as a guest speaker! The students asked several questions and Dr. Ramirez shared many interesting facts about himself. Dr. Ramirez said one of his biggest priorities that students feel safe in school. Dr. Ramirez share with the class his love for sports and showed us a real NFL Buffalo Bills helmet he keeps in his office. He also talked about his family and his love for Barbecuing! We think we are going to have him show us his cooking skills sometime this year!
Today we had our new vice principal Mr. Perry in our classroom as a guest speaker. The students prepared several questions to ask Mr. Perry and then read their question to him. We learned several things about Mr. Perry including he is a car detailing enthusiast and would love to teach our students about the skills of detailing a car and how we can use the skill as a fundraiser!
Yesterday former student Lynne Krawczyk visited our classroom and gave a great speech. Lynne graduated from our school last year and wanted to come in and talk about the transitioning to the real world after high school and the challenges it poses for people with disabilities. It was a wonderful speech and very informative. It was great to see Lynne and everyone in the class loved seeing her!
Today Mrs. Mather received this message from Lynne: Hi Mrs. Mather Please tell Mr. Mitri, "Thank you so much for letting me be your guest speaker, I was so happy and honored to do the speech." Today we had a guest speaker, Kristie Edwards from Heritage Centers. It was a great experience for our class to learn about the opportunities after high school. Mrs. Edwards talk to our class about Vocational Services, Community Services, Case management, Residential Services, and Educational Programs. Not only was the information great for the students but it was great for our staff to know what things we can focus on to best prepare our students for life after high school!
As part of my Social Science lessons I have invited guest speakers into my classroom to introduce themselves to the students. It is a way to teach the students about the people that are around them and most important to them in their community. It is also a great way to bring people into the classroom and meet our students. We are now reaching out to the community and inviting people into the classroom. Today NYS Assemblyman David DiPietro was our guest and he spoke to the students about job, recreation and transportation opportunities in our area. My students gave Mr. DiPietro a tour of our Recycling Program. The students also showed Mr. DiPietro a tour of the Laundromat project we opened. Mr. DiPietro has lots of experience with the laundry business and was very impressed with everything the students are learning. It was a great experience for the students!

We are now reaching out to the community and inviting people into the classroom. Friday we met the East Aurora Golf Instructor, Mr. Reynold Jennetti. Mr. Jennetti is deaf and talked to the students about overcoming challenges in life. Mr. Jennetti was inspirational to the students and staff. Mr. Jennetti answered several questions from the students and even brought a golf ball and tees as a gift for each student! You can view Mr. Jennetti's website here. Thus far we have met the School Nurse, Guidance Counselor, School Psychologist, All Principals at the High School, School Resource Officer, School Business Administrator, Superintendent of Schools, and the Board of Education President. We are now reaching out to the community and inviting people into the classroom. Yesterday we met the Elma Town Supervisor, Mr. Powers. It was a great experience for the students with Mr. Powers spending an hour in the classroom answering several questions from the students and even brought Elma Town Pencils as a gift for each student! We had a student guest speaker, senior Jamie Thuman, present to the class about the responsibility of taking care of a pet, in her case horses! The students learned about the responsibility of feeding, washing and grooming, training, and taking a pet to the veterinarian. |
